What it is
A wooden hive-top feeder that sits on top of the uppermost hive body, replacing the inner cover during feeding season. Holds 2–3 gallons of sugar syrup and lets the entire colony access the feed from inside the hive without leaving through the entrance.
When to use a top-hive feeder
Heavy feeding periods — fall build-up, spring stimulation, winter emergency feeding — where you want large-volume, low-robbing-risk syrup delivery. Top-hive feeders are robbing-resistant (the feed is deep inside the hive) and hold enough syrup to not need daily attention.
Usage notes
Level installation matters — a tilted feeder leaks syrup out the back of the hive. Check for leaks the first day by watching for syrup on the ground around the hive base. Clean thoroughly at the end of feeding season; dried syrup attracts ants and wax moths.
Compatibility
10-frame Langstroth. Sits in place of the inner cover, under the telescoping outer cover. Unpainted wood works inside the hive; paint the outside sides only.
