What it is

A capping scratcher — a hand tool with a row of metal tines used to uncap honey cells before extracting. You drag the tines across the face of the capped comb, breaking the wax cappings so honey can flow out during spinning.

When a scratcher vs. a knife

Scratchers are the right choice for irregular comb, deep wax pockets the knife skips over, and uncapping small batches where warming up a heated knife isn't worth the setup. For large-volume uncapping (dozens of frames at a time), an uncapping knife is faster.

Usage notes

Clean the tines after each session — dried honey and propolis make the tool sticky and less precise. Store dry; the tines are usually plain steel and can rust in humid garages.

Compatibility

Any size or depth of honey frame, any hive style. Essential for uncapping operations of any size.
