What it is
Super DFM is a direct-fed microbial product from Strong Microbials — a powder of beneficial bacteria and yeasts intended to support the natural gut microbiome of honey bees. The 100 gram size is the small starter pack, suitable for backyard or sideline operations.
When colonies might need it
The gut microbiome of honey bees is implicated in disease resistance, particularly against Nosema and gut pathogens. Antibiotic treatments, prolonged dearth, syrup-only feeding, and other stressors can disrupt the microbiome. DFM supplementation is intended to help re-establish beneficial microbes in those situations.
How to use it
Two methods are common: dust the powder directly onto the top bars of frames during inspections (bees walk over it and groom it off, ingesting it) or mix it into pollen patties before placing the patties in the hive. Manufacturer instructions on the package give specific application rates.
Notes
Not a varroa or disease treatment. The peer-reviewed literature on direct-fed microbials in honey bees is growing but still limited. Best understood as a supportive supplement during periods of stress, not a curative treatment.
