What it is
A refillable plastic in-frame trap that fills with food-grade vegetable oil. Sits in a slot between top bars in the brood box. Small hive beetles enter the trap looking for refuge from bees, fall into the oil reservoir, and drown. Empty and refill periodically through the season as the trap fills with dead beetles.
When to use it
Good baseline beetle management in colonies with persistent pressure, particularly in southern climates. Strong colony populations remain the most important defense; oil traps are a complement, not a substitute. Pair with the Beetle Crusher (sold separately on this site) for layered mechanical and oil-trap coverage.
Notes
Use food-grade vegetable oil only — never used motor oil, mineral oil, or anything else. Position the trap on the periphery of the brood nest, not in the center of the broodest frames.
