Natural Chemistry That Actually Works
Thymol — the same compound that gives thyme and oregano their smell — is a surprisingly effective miticide. Apiguard delivers it in a slow-release gel matrix that creates sustained vapor levels inside the hive over a 4-week treatment window.
Temperature Matters
Thymol volatilizes with heat. Below 60°F, evaporation drops and treatment efficacy suffers. Apiguard is best suited to late summer treatments (August–September in Arkansas) when you want to reduce mite loads before the critical winter bees are raised. At those temperatures, efficacy is strong and you stay well clear of honey supers.
Protocol
Place one tray on top of the frames for two weeks, then replace it with the second tray for another two weeks. The hive needs a small space above the tray for the vapor to circulate — run without an inner cover, or with the inner cover inverted so there's airspace above the gel.
