What it is
Unassembled deep wooden frame components — top bar, bottom bar, two side bars, and the nails — shipped flat. You assemble them yourself and pair with deep foundation sold separately.
Why the unassembled option
Per-frame cost is lower than assembled and shipping is more efficient, so beekeepers running multiple hives or replacing frames seasonally buy unassembled. Assembly is four nails per frame, a couple of minutes each. A brad nailer turns an afternoon's work into half an hour.

Usage notes
Wood glue in the joints before nailing adds decades of life. Pre-drill pilot holes for thicker brads if your wood is particularly dry. Once assembled, install foundation same day — fresh wax holds straight; bent foundation draws crooked.
