Drone Comb Deep Frame
Deep plastic frame with oversized drone cell foundation. Use for varroa mite trapping (freeze before emergence) or drone saturation for selective breeding. Two strategies, opposite actions.
- Oversized drone cell foundation — bees draw drone comb preferentially
- Varroa IPM: mites concentrate in drone brood, freeze frame to kill them
- Drone saturation: flood your area with quality drones for better mating
- Two strategies with opposite actions — decide your purpose before placing
- Chemical-free mite management tool when used for IPM
- Deep frame size — fits standard 10-frame deep hive bodies
Deep-sized plastic frame with oversized cell foundation that bees will preferentially draw into drone comb. This frame serves two completely different purposes depending on your goal — and the actions are opposite, so decide which strategy you are using before you place it.
Varroa IPM (freeze method): Varroa mites reproduce more effectively in drone brood, so they concentrate in these cells. Place the frame, let the queen lay drone eggs, and once the cells are capped (about 24 days after eggs are laid), pull the frame and freeze it for 48 hours to kill the mites and drone brood. Then return the frame to the hive — bees will clean out the dead brood and the queen will lay again. Repeat on a 4-week cycle through the active season. WARNING: if you forget to pull the frame and the drones emerge, you have just released a concentrated batch of mites back into the colony. This makes your mite problem worse, not better. Set a calendar reminder. Timing and discipline are non-negotiable with this method.
Drone saturation (genetics method): If you have a colony with genetics you want to propagate — strong production, gentle temperament, good mite resistance — leave the drone comb frame in and let the drones emerge naturally. More drones from your best colony means better odds that virgin queens in your area mate with quality stock. This is low-effort selective breeding. Do NOT freeze the frame when using it for this purpose.
