What it is
A heavy-duty hive tool from Apis Tactical with a longer blade and thicker stock than the standard version. The extra length gives you more leverage for prying apart boxes that have been heavily propolized shut — which after a season or two in Arkansas humidity is basically all of them.
When to use it
Beekeepers running multiple hives, working with older equipment, or cracking open boxes that haven't been touched in a month will reach for a heavy-duty tool every time. The standard 6-inch tool can handle a new hive where propolis hasn't built up yet; the heavy-duty is what keeps working when propolis is three years deep on the frame rests.
What to expect
Thicker stock means more weight in the hand — some beekeepers prefer it (more authority when prying), some don't (fatigue over a long inspection day). If you're inspecting more than four colonies in a session, the extra weight gives you less fatigue in the wrist than constant re-gripping a smaller tool.
Usage notes
Paint the handle bright. Hive tools disappear into grass. A carabiner or lanyard saves you the 10 minutes of looking before every other inspection.
