Slot-style plastic queen excluder. Lightweight and economical. 10-frame.
- Lightweight slot-style design
- Economical option for new setups
- 10-frame sizing
What it is
A plastic queen excluder sized for 10-frame Langstroth hives. Sits above the brood chamber; worker bees pass through the slots, the queen can't fit.
When to use it
Install before the main honey flow with empty or drawn supers stacked above. Remove after harvest — excluders are working equipment, not permanent installations.
Plastic vs. metal-bound
Plastic costs less and does the job. Metal-bound lasts longer under repeated box-on-box pressure and won't warp. Backyard operations generally get their money's worth from plastic; commercial operations often prefer metal-bound.
"Honey excluder" issue
Bees sometimes refuse to cross an excluder to start a new super. The workaround is to run a drawn super directly above the excluder — bees willingly move into already-drawn comb even with the mesh. Bare foundation above the excluder can sit empty for weeks until a nectar flow pushes the bees up.
Compatibility
10-frame Langstroth. Fits between the top brood box and the first honey super.
