What it is
A mid-size stainless steel smoker from Dadant & Sons with a wire finger shield around the firebox. Dadant is the Hamilton, Illinois family-owned manufacturer that's been building beekeeping equipment for over a century.
Why this vs. the large
This smoker has a smaller firebox than the large model — a full load of fuel runs ~30–45 minutes rather than ~60–90. For single-hive or two-hive operations, it's plenty. For longer sessions or multi-yard work, most beekeepers step up to the large.
The finger shield
The wire cage around the firebox is what lets you hold and set the smoker down during inspections without burning your hands or the wood of a hive box. By the end of a session, the inner firebox is over 400°F — the shield is essential, not decorative.
Construction
Stainless steel body, stainless bellows cap. Rainproof construction. Cotton-fiber bellows material is the standard wear item on any smoker; replacements are available when they eventually crack.
Usage notes
Light from the bottom: a scrap of newspaper, a few puffs to establish heat, then pack compressed fuel on top and work the bellows to keep it going. Cool, white smoke is what calms bees — if you're putting out hot yellow flame from the nozzle, you've packed too loosely or the fire's burning too hot.
