What it is

A one-pound bag of compressed cotton smoker fuel. Burns longer than pine needles or grass clippings and produces cool, dense smoke when you work the bellows right.

Why cotton fuel

Cotton is dense, slow-burning, and produces very little ash — a cotton-packed smoker holds fuel for 30–60 minutes depending on bellows rate. Loose natural fuels (pine needles, burlap scraps) work in a pinch but burn hotter, go out faster, and fill the smoker with ash between sessions.

Lighting

Light from the bottom: a scrap of paper or a lighter at the base of the pile, a few slow bellows pumps to establish heat, then pack fresh fuel on top. Cotton catches slowly — give it time to smolder before packing the smoker solid. The smoke you want is cool and white; hot yellow flame at the nozzle means you've overpumped.

Usage notes

Store the bag sealed and dry. A pound is enough for a dozen inspection sessions for most backyard beekeepers. Dispose of used fuel in a metal can with a lid — a pile of smoldering cotton in a cardboard box is a fire.

Compatibility

Fits any standard smoker (large Dadant, medium Dadant, or other commercial smokers).
